For our Tyler and East Texas customers, Absolutely Beautiful Yards offers Centipede and Bermuda grass seeding in Spring and early Summer, and we offer overseeding with Annual Rye grass in the Fall.
Bermuda Grass Seeding
Bermuda grass is a wonderful selection for anyone who lives in East Texas and desires a turf grass that can withstand our hot sunny days with minimal amounts of water.
Bermuda is a low growing wiry grass that provides good ground cover that withstands constant use from being walked upon or being treated harshly by pets.
Bermuda grass spreads naturally by producing seeds and it can spread through above ground shoots called stolons or below ground shoots referred to as rhizomes.
While the aggressive growth of Bermuda grass produces a wide ground covering, the below ground rhizomes can also infiltrate flower or garden beds and be the source of frustration.
Bermuda grass is a perennial grass and therefore reseeding is normally not necessary. It has a rich green tone with a medium to fine texture and is well suited for East Texas lawns.
During our cooler months, Bermuda grass turns brown and the blades of the grass appear dead. For some, this is a major disadvantage of this grass. Nevertheless, the grass will return to a lush green carpet in late Spring and will remain green until the start of Winter.
Absolutely Beautiful Yards provides Bermuda grass seeding in Spring and early Summer.
Annual Rye Grass Seeding
Annual Rye grass can be used to green up East Texas lawns comprised of warmer climate grasses such as Bermuda grass. Annual Rye grass will provide a carpet of green during our Winter and early Spring months and will die off as summer approaches. An added benefit is that it will add natural nutrients to the soil as it dies out for the more heat tolerant grasses.
Annual Rye grass germinates quickly and seeding is relatively simple as no soil preparation is necessary as long as the seed has contact with the soil and is spread uniformly throughout the area to be seeded.
Absolutely Beautiful Yards prefers to apply Annual Rye grass seed just prior to expected rain because this will deliver results quickly and one can expect to see little “grasslings” sprouting after just a few days.
Centipede Grass Seeding
Centipede Grass is a pale green, medium textured, slow growing, but aggressive grass that can produce a dense, attractive, weed-free turf. It is more shade tolerant than Bermuda grass. Since Centipede produces only surface runners, it is easily controlled around borders of flower beds and walks.
Like pine trees and Azaleas, Centipede grass thrives in acid soils and therefore is popular in East Texas.
Absolutely Beautiful Yards can apply Centipede seed from April to July, and this permits a full growing season before winter weather. Centipede grass seed may take up to 2 to 3 weeks to germinate. We do not apply Centipede in the Fall because the young seedlings may not become sufficiently established to withstand the cold of Winter. |
